What is the Internet and how did it start?
The Internet started in the late 1960s when the US military needed a secure way to transfer information quickly between two points. This very early form of the Internet was known as ARPANET. Email first appeared in 1972 as a very basic way of sending something through this 'network' of computers.
The Internet matured in the 1980s as new technology was invented and more institutions got connected. In the early 1990s the first web browsers appeared allowing people to view a web page that contained images and colours.
This caused the Internet to explode. From 1993 to 1998 the number of web servers grew from 130 to over 2 million. Today, around 64 million people use the Internet regularly in the United States.
The Internet is now a significant part of most people's lives. Emails can be sent overseas to relatives in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost. Businesses conduct multi-national deals without leaving the office. Over 1 million copies of the Harry Potter book were ordered and shipped by the online store Amazon - this is a new record for e-commerce.
You can do your banking over the Internet, you can find almost any type of information on the search engines, you can chat to people across the world and much more.
